The Mableton City Manager serves as the chief executive and administrative officer for the City of Mableton and is appointed by the Mayor and Council. The City Manager ensures all laws, ordinances, provisions of the charter, and acts of the council are executed, and the City Manager submits the annual operating and capital budgets to the Council. The City Manager directs and supervises the administration of all departments, offices, and agencies of the City except the appointed positions provided in the Mableton Charter.
William “Bill” Tanks was appointed to the role of City Manager for the City of Mableton, GA on April 1st, 2024. He holds a Master’s Degree of Accounting from Georgia State University, Master’s Degree of Business Administration from Kennesaw University, a Bachelor’s Degree from Morris Brown College and Fire Science Degree from Chattahoochee Technical College. Mr. Tanks considers his role as City Manager a calling to serve the citizens and to achieve the potential and mission of the great City of Mableton.
Mr. Tanks has served in various leadership roles within cities and counties including as the Executive Director for Public Services for the City of Powder Springs, GA from December 2021 until April 2024. In his Powder Springs role, he served as second in command to the city manager and provided executive leadership to the three department heads of the Powder Springs Police Department, Parks Department, and the Municipal Court. Mr. Tanks has also served as the Agency Director for Public Services for Cobb County and provided executive leadership to the seven department heads for the Cobb County Senior Services, Library System, Elections, UGA Cobb Extension Offices, Cobb Sustainability Waste and Beautification, Cobb Parks Department, and the South Cobb Government Services Center. He reported directly to the County Manager. Prior to serving as the Agency Director for Public Services with Cobb County Government he served as an Executive Chief Officer for Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services. His combined eleven years of senior executive experience in local government was preceded by 21 years of faithful service to the citizens of Cobb County as a Cobb County Firefighter, Fire Officer, Chief Officer and paramedic. Mr. Tanks also served in the United States Navy and Navy Reserves for 20 years until his retirement in 2006 as a Chief Petty Officer.
Mr. Tanks has received many awards for his service in the military, public safety, and local government. His community involvement spans more than 30 years, and he has served on several local boards either as a member, treasurer or chair. He teaches leadership and team building across the country and has presented virtual training about team building and transformational leadership for the Georgia Municipal Association.
Mr. Tanks has lived in Cobb County for 32 years with 30 of those years in Mableton. He and his wife, Lee Ann Tanks, currently live in the West Cobb area and own a second home in Mableton. Bill Tanks is the father of four adult children and grandfather of one college student and two elementary students.
